Bringing excellence to MH-MA athletics in the name of legendary coach John Flynn

THE CAMPAIGN IS NOW COMPLETE!!! The $550,000 goal was surpassed! The Flynn Athletic Center is complete and open. Scoreboards have been installed and work on the football facility and New Gym is complete. Take a look at some of the recent pictures. of the tranformation and what our students think about the Flynn Center. A HUGE thanks to Mick & Marlys Haverty and everyone who contributed to the campaign. What a gift!

It is no surprise that all of our athletic teams have improved significantly and started bringing championships back to MH-MA. This campaign is what put the recent success in motion. Thank you everyone for helping the Ravens "strive for excellence!"

Campaign Overview

The John Flynn Athletics Campaign helped Maur Hill-Mount Academy take positive steps toward student-athlete excellence by upgrading our current facilities. The campus improvement from this campaign has helped our current students improve their abilities, as well as attract potential students to our school. The campaign consisted of the keystone project, converting the Old Gym into the John Flynn Athletic Center, as well as several other projects that enhanced the current athletic facilities. The school’s history is filled with athletic success, led by Coach Flynn’s football program (along with Guy Galley’s decades of success prior to Flynn). This campaign has already helped bring our athletic programs near the level of past success.

Along with the John Flynn Athletic Center, which is one of the best weight-training and workout facilities in the area, the campaign included:

  • Renovations to the gym’s locker rooms and lobby
  • Adding air conditioning to the main gym
  • A new concession stand/outdoor bathroom/ticket booth (Courtney S. Turner Gateway) for the football field
  • New home bleachers for the football field
  • A new roof for the Gym
  • Scoreboards for the football field, gym, soccer field, and baseball field

Each of the proposed areas are facilities where Coach Flynn spent significant time as a coach at Maur Hill Prep and MH-MA. The campaign will literally improve "the places where John Flynn walked.”

The Facilities

The John Flynn Athletic Center

  1.  Weight Room Facility - 55% of the gym area will be dedicated to weights and cardio machines. This main workout facility will also include areas for non-traditional workout equipment. Weightlifting platforms, weight machines with multiple functions, and cardio equipment will populate this area. The equipment make-up will allow students with many different workout goals the opportunity to train in the complex. The platforms and machines will allow for simultaneous team workouts, while the cardio equipment and weight machines will allow beginners and individuals to participate as well.
  2. Team Workout Area - 45% of the main floor will be the resurfaced gym wood floor with mirrors on the walls to allow teams to conduct workouts. Some non-traditional training methods can be used in this area as well as regular workouts for cheer and dance.
  3. Restoration of Restrooms, Upstairs Track, Lights and Windows/Doors - The current Old Gym has not been used regularly for several years. It is in need of repair to use full-time as a weight-training facility. The current railing on the track needs to be brought up to code, the restrooms renovated, the wood floor refinished, lights repaired, and doors/windows repaired. A complete painting of the facility is needed. A new “John Flynn Athletic Center” sign will welcome people to the facility.
  4. Added Air Conditioning - The John Flynn Athletic Center would benefit by being completely air conditioned. Currently, there is no air in the facility and the summers are very hot and suffocating. AC would improve airflow and make the facility more usable during the summer months, which is essential for our athletes.

New Gym Renovation

  1.  New Roof - The current roof of the gym has been repaired several times. Each time, the repair consisted of patching an area or finding a temporary solution. Currently, the roof continues to leak. The gym floor was resurfaced last year, a sound system was added, and the entire gym was painted. Putting a new roof on the current building is a necessity for the longevity of the gym.
  2.  Air Conditioning - The gym has never had air conditioning. As an all-boys school, the gym was mainly used during the winter and AC wasn’t essential. Now, the gym is used throughout the year with volleyball, basketball, spring sports workouts, summer leagues, and graduation. Adding air conditioning will create better circulation and cool a building that “cooks” when it’s warm.
  3.  Locker Rooms - The locker rooms are virtually in the same state as they were when built in 1962. The restrooms, showers, and coaches’ offices are in desperate need of attention. Since our student enrollment is smaller and co-ed, it makes sense to renovate our current locker room areas into 4 smaller locker rooms. This will allow both boys and girls sides to have two locker rooms each, which gives visiting teams a locker room to use when we host a competition. This change also opens the door to the possibility of hosting tournaments.
  4.  Lobby - The entry way into the gym is an important place to show guests “who you are” and leave a good first impression. It is also an important place to show our hallmark Benedictine hospitality. MH-MA has a long line of success in various sports. However, the lobby is not able to highlight that success in an attractive way. Renovating this area will allow the school to visually show both its past and current athletic success.

Football Field Improvements

  1. Restroom/Concession Stand/ Ticket Booth - MH-MA football has a history of success dating back to the early years of Maur Hill Prep with longtime coach Guy Galley. Both Galley and Flynn were known for toughness, class and doing things the “right way.” However, when you experience  Guy Galley field today, you experience this: You pay at a card table and receive a program, then walk to the Roost under the gym for a hotdog and drink.  Next, you must go upstairs into the gym to use the restroom. Then you head back out to the field in hopes that you didn’t miss too much. We would like to make games at MH-MA more “fan friendly” by building a structure that will consist of a ticket booth with a breezeway to enter the field. A main concession stand (with running water) and restroom facilities will also be a part of the building.
  2. Home Bleachers - Maur Hill-Mount Academy is one of the few schools whose home bleachers are smaller than the visitors. As the football program improves, more seating is needed. The current home bleachers are made of wood and are in need of repair. Replacing the current home bleachers with bigger aluminum sections would be a significant upgrade and help establish a stronger home field advantage.
  3. Football Field Scoreboard - Upgrading the current scoreboard to a newer model and placing it on the south end of the field will enhance the look and functionality of the facility. As you enter Guy Galley Field, the scoreboard will now be in plain view as a stand-alone structure in the south end of the field.
  4. New track surface - Installing a new track surface so our track team can actually have a home track to practice on.
